Decarbonising London

Every neighbourhood, corporation and public body in London must decarbonise, fast. How can we remain a global leader in urban decarbonisation and prepare for a 2°C+ future?

London is a world leader in urban decarbonisation. Our air quality has improved and total emissions in the capital have fallen by 21% since 2016, a larger reduction than the national average.

But the next phase of the transition will be harder – and more urgent. To remain competitive, habitable and resilient in the long term, London must decarbonise rapidly, while adapting to a changing climate.

Decarbonising London is Centre for London’s research programme focused on how the capital can reduce emissions, strengthen climate resilience and deliver the benefits of the transition fairly across the capital. It explores how decisions on the economy, buildings, energy, transport, infrastructure and neighbourhoods interact – and what needs to be true to move from ambition to delivery at pace and scale.

The programme is built around a simple idea: climate action and climate resilience are not optional environmental goals. We want warmer, more affordable homes, healthier citizens and cleaner air. We want reliable infrastructure and good jobs.  Net zero is not just an environmental imperative. It’s an economic development strategy – one that can drive fairness, competitiveness, and resilience.

Decarbonising London is a collaborative programme. We are keen to work with partners across the public, private and civic sectors to refine priorities, test ideas and build shared approaches to delivery. Through evidence‑led research, cross‑sector convening and focused policy design, the programme aims to equip decision‑makers with practical insight – strengthening the case for action and helping London get ready for the future.
