Panel Discussion: Developing London

panel-discussion

How will planning reforms, Labour’s housebuilding targets and the legacy of the last Government impact house building and major infrastructure projects in the capital over the next five years? How do we meet the scale of housing need in tandem with positioning London as an ascendant global city?

Introduction to breakout sessions

MORNING BREAK

Thematic Breakout Sessions

Breakout sessions

In these first workshops of the day, delegates and experts from across sectors will join moderated, thematic sessions.

1 Unlocking Growth – The Bakerloo Line Extension, facilitated by Central London Forward, the London Borough of Southwark and the London Borough of Lewisham

  • Investing in infrastructure is vital to driving growth in our city.
  • The Bakerloo Line Upgrade and Extension is the next big opportunity for London. It would unlock tens of thousands of homes and deliver a £1.5bn boost to our economy.
  • Join us to explore how we can deliver the infrastructure our city needs to grow.

2 Creating an Inclusive Growth Plan for Young London, facilitated by Mayor’s Fund for London

  • Join a collaborative conversation to make London’s Growth Plan inclusive for the next generation. Led by young people from the Mayor’s Fund for London, this is a chance to see through their eyes.
  • As the Mayor pledges 150,000 good jobs by 2028, how do we ensure young Londoners facing the biggest barriers are included?

3 What should an industrial strategy for London look like?, facilitated by The London School of Economics and Political Science

  • How can an industrial strategy help the capital optimise its strengths, minimise its weaknesses and develop opportunities for future growth?
  • What sectors need particular focus and what infrastructure needs particular investment – should housing be part of the strategy?
  • What role would the rest of the UK have in the strategy and how can we make sure the strategy works with and alongside the rest of the country

4 Royal Wharf: A Transformation Story, facilitated by Ballymore

  • Alongside 4,000 homes, Royal Wharf in Newham has a high street, community centre, primary school and a Thames Clippers Pier
  • Constructed in just six years, Ballymore’s Royal Wharf in east London is demonstrating how large-scale development can meet the need for housing and foster communities
  • Presented by Ballymore MD of Development Stevan Tennant and architect Glenn Howells

5 Roundtable discussion: How can Mayoral Development Corporations drive urban regeneration and improve economic growth? Challenges, opportunities, and insights from, facilitated by OPDC

  • Join us to discuss the role of Mayoral Development Corporations (MDCs) in delivering urban regeneration and supporting wider government ambitions for UK housebuilding, sustainability, and growth.
  • OPDC is managing London’s biggest new brownfield development and using this for context we will explore whether, where and when MDCs may be the right model for large scale regeneration projects, as well as their potential risks and challenges.
  • With a new MDC planned for London’s West End and the government committed to development corporations to support its housing mission, this will be a fully participative session with plenty of scope to address what has become the new hot topic for delivering at scale and pace.

LUNCH

Thematic Breakout Sessions

Breakout sessions

Delegates have the opportunity to join different thematic sessions.

Panel Discussion: Decarbonising London

panel-discussion

How will we achieve London’s ambitious target to achieve net zero by 2030? What decarbonisation initiatives are working now and how do we maximize the opportunity for inclusive economic development? What other interventions are needed to boost productivity and develop the city sustainably?

AFTERNOON BREAK

Panel Discussion: Governing London

panel-discussion

What opportunities do a politically aligned local and national government present for London over the next five years? With ‘levelling up’ no longer on the agenda, what is needed to ensure London’s politicians and policymakers implement the national missions in a way that delivers for all Londoners? What does London need from the English Devolution Bill, and how do we ensure devolution extends beyond the Borough Council level?
