Capitalising on the strengths of London’s fastest-growing sub-region so all residents can live well, succeed and thrive.
Local London is the capital’s largest and fastest-growing sub-region. It is home to 2.7 million people. It boasts 40% of London’s land and significant reserves of developable brownfield sites.
The sub-regional partnership brings together the boroughs of Barking & Dagenham, Bexley, Bromley, Greenwich, Havering, Newham, Enfield, Redbridge, and Waltham Forest.
The sub-region’s economy already contributes over £60 billion in economic output annually. Meanwhile, business growth and employment rates outpace both London and the UK.
Local London is also strategically positioned to be the UK’s gateway to global trade. It has two deep-water ports, unmatched potential for development along the river and strategic links to the UK Innovation Corridor, wider South East and Europe.
Together, these assets position Local London as a key area for inclusive growth.
Yet, these successes mask local inequalities and untapped potential. Productivity growth lags behind the UK average and weekly pay is the lowest in London.
If the sub-region meets its challenges head on, and capitalises on its strong foundations, Local London can become an engine of growth, benefitting both London and the wider UK.
To realise this potential, Centre for London and Local London co-created four core missions in collaboration with boroughs, businesses and local partners:
- Attracting Investment: Showcasing high-potential sites and projects, establishing a unified investment brand, and launching an Investment & Development Forum.
- Unlocking Infrastructure: Prioritising and advocating for major infrastructure projects, leading campaigns to secure investment in transport, digital, public services, and energy infrastructure.
- Supporting Enterprise and Business: Upgrading business support services, establishing a Local London Anchor Network, and increasing access to affordable workspace for startups and scale-ups.
- Boosting Work and Skills: Supporting residents into quality jobs, refreshing the Local Skills Improvement Plan, and strengthening partnerships with employers, educators, and youth services.
