Social clubs have long been part of London’s community life. As member-owned, not-for-profit institutions, they provide affordable spaces where people can meet, volunteer, celebrate and build lasting relationships.
As London witnesses growing social disconnection, affordable community spaces become ever more vital. A third of Londoners feel lonely, neighbourhood interaction is at an all-time low, and the cost-of-living crisis is making social activities feel like a luxury.
Yet, many social clubs are facing significant challenges. Across the capital, community groups are feeling the pinch of the cost-of-living crisis on their own pockets, while redevelopment and changing patterns of engagement create additional pressures.
This event will delve into the research – understanding the vital roles social clubs play as social, cultural and community infrastructure, the challenges they face, and ultimately what can be done to help them thrive.
We’ll be hosting a presentation of our findings, followed by conversations with prominent voices from the social club and community sector – with plenty of time to connect and network over a complimentary drink.
