Worth over £10 billion to the economy in the last five years. Four thousand production companies call London home. A recent boom in demand and studio construction.
London and the South East is a global centre for high quality film, TV, video games and advertising.
But the screen industries still face serious challenges. Skill shortages, space constraints and a lack of collaborative thinking threaten to undermine this UK success story. How might we enable and encourage screen industries to continue growing?
On Monday 27 March, Centre for London brought together industry experiences, policymakers, developers and other related organisations to:
- Spotlight the success of screen industries in London and the South East, and the contribution this makes to the wider UK economy.
- Explore the rich and intricate ecosystems that screen industries need to thrive.
- Consider screen industries’ role in providing opportunities and career paths for disadvantaged young Londoners.
- Examine ways to tackle skill shortages through boosting education and specialist training.
- Discuss the need for better policies to enable more and better studios, key craft space, support functions and on-location shooting.
- Identify routes to influencing those with the levers of power to see, understand and act on the opportunities for the screen industries in London and the South East.
