Responding to the publication of the Winsor Review, Nick Bowes, Chief Executive, Centre for London said:
“Today’s publication of the Winsor Review and the responses to it are a stark reminder of the muddled accountability of London’s police.
This messy situation isn’t a result of too much devolution, but rather not enough. The Government should reflect carefully before any response that centralises even more power in Whitehall.
What is needed is a radical overhaul of London’s policing where nothing is off the table. This should include:
- separating out the Met Police’s national responsibilities, freeing it to focus solely on policing the city
- making the Met solely accountable to the Mayor, giving them the power to hire and fire the commissioner.”
