Responding to the latest unemployment figures from the Office for National Statistics, Antonia Jennings, Chief Executive at Centre for London said:
“Today’s figures show that London is once again bearing the brunt of rising unemployment. This will be a huge worry for many Londoners, especially as rising prices mean it’s increasingly hard to make ends meet here without a job.
A high growth region is only beneficial to its residents if it creates secure, well paid jobs. And while our median income is the highest in the UK, once housing costs are accounted for we barely hover above the national average.
We need government to raise benefits to match the real cost of living in London so people can survive while they find their next role, and more investment in skills support for the people who need to retrain to find the job for them.”
