Our response to census car usage data

Responding to new ONS census data on household car or van availability, Josh Cottell, Research Manager at Centre for London said:

“Today’s housing census data reveals a significant disparity in car usage between different parts of London. In Inner London, the proportion of households with no cars or vans was nearly double the proportion in Outer London.

Among London’s boroughs there is greater variation still, from as low as 23% of households with no cars or vans in Havering, to as high as 65% in Islington.

This data suggests that improving access to public transport and active and sustainable travel in outer London should be a priority in order to reduce car usage and meet the Mayor’s target of becoming a net-zero carbon city by 2030.”
