Thinking Outside the Box: A Debate on the Role of Microhousing in Tackling London’s Housing Crisis

This event has already taken place.

In a city where land and space are at a premium, the idea of building homes with smaller unit sizes is gaining traction, particularly as a way of ensuring young professionals are not priced out of central London. The ‘microhousing’ option is not, however, without criticism. RIBA has described new builds which fail to meet minimum size standards as “rabbit hutches”.

This event will explore the role that microhousing could play in tackling London’s shortage of homes, and will explore the opportunities and challenges of building smaller homes at scale.

Can efficient design really make up for limited space? Does the ‘micro’ lifestyle appeal beyond single young professionals? How would new microhomes impact existing neighbourhoods? And how should local authorities respond to these new approaches to housing design and delivery?

Join us and a line-up of expert panelists for what promises to be an informative and lively debate. Attendees will have the opportunity to contextualise these ideas by viewing U+I’s prototype Townflats after the discussion closes.
