Our response to government’s compulsory lets plan for empty shops

Responding to reports that the government plan to enforce compulsory lets of retail units that have been left vacant for at least six months, Claire Harding, Research Director at Centre for London said:

“Abandoned shops are a blight on our high streets, so it’s great news that government are planning for compulsory lets of vacant units – we called for this last year in our Community Town Centres report. We’re looking forward to seeing more details of their plans, as it’s really important that local authorities have the right information and resources both to run auctions and to enable them to easily identify the landlords of vacant properties, so that they can take action.”ENDSNotes to Editors
